Biography
Okoda Mayuko, born in 1992 and raised Kanagawa prefecture. In 2011, she entered the Faculty of Education and Human Sciences, Yokohama National University. At the end of her third year at university, she knew the Stencil dyeing; katazome, a traditional Japanese dyeing technique and started producing. In 2016, she entered the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, majoring in art education. In 2021, she completed the doctoral course (Textile Arts) at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. Currently, she works as an educational research assistant at the Textile Arts Laboratory of the Department of Crafts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts.
She creates works using the traditional Japanese technique of stencil dyeing; katazome. The themes of her works are myths, old tales, and legends. she dynamically draws people, animals, plants, and fictional creatures, and creates katazome works that express the Japanese admiration for nature in ancient myths and the reverence for invisible gods.
